3 Fat Loss Secrets From Bally the Dog

Woof Woof!

Bally the Dog here, and since my Human is away on holiday, I thought I'd email you with 3 fitness tips to help you lose fat.

After all, I finally figured out how to use the "Human's" computer, but if you see any spelling mistakes, please furgive me, but my big paws aren't meant for these small computerz.

Oh, and if you're a cat, please stop reading. Because I don't like you and I will chase you down if I find out you are reading this.

Good.

Here we go...

Tip #1 - Get your exercise in the morning

After my morning walk, I usually get a rawhide treat, and then I just lie on the ground waiting for my next walk. And while I do that, I get to listen to my Human do fitness interviews for magazines and radio stations...

...and he keeps on saying:

"It doesn't matter when you exercise for fat loss, all that matters is that you are consistent. And when you exercise first thing in the morning, that means you will be more consistent. And being consistent is one of the most important things in your fat loss program."

Woof, woof, maybe that's why I get a long walk and some sprints first thing in the morning? Bark bark!

That is probably why the vet once said to my human, "Wow, your dog has six pack abs!"

Woof woof!

So if you are struggling to be consistent, get up a little earlier and do your workout before life/work/family gets in the way and stops you from getting your workout.

Woof.

Tip #2 - Eat 3 medium sized meals and some very healthy snacks

Since I'm a dog, I'll eat just about anything. And that is good news, because that means I love to snack on apples, blueberries, broccoli, red peppers, and bananas.

Woof, I probably eat more fruits and vegetables than most humans, not including my Human. He eats a lot of fruits and vegetables every day, even while traveling.

And he has six pack abs too. Woof, woof, woof.

Tip #3 - Stay active on your off days with fun & playful activity

Even though I'm almost 5 human years old, I still get anxious when my Human leaves me alone at home and goes to the gym.

Woof, woof, woof! Bark, bark, bark! Whine. Bark Bark! WOOF!

I am sure am glad that he only goes 3-4 times per week, instead of 6-7 times per week like some folks.

On his days off, we go to the beach and parks and have fun. No long, slow, boring cardio for him. I won't allow it.

Grrrrrrrrr. That's what I say to cardio machines. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I'd rather chase squirrels any day than get on a treadmill or one of those silly elliptical machines.

So bottom line:

1) Do short, burst workouts CONSISTENTLY.

2) Eat 3 mid-size meals and lots of whole, natural food snacks in between meals.

3) Train 3-4 times per week and stay active on your off-days.

Woof.

What Are Systemic Proteolytic Enzymes and How Can You Benefit from Them?

Proteolytic enzymes, also referred to as "proteases," are enzymes that break down proteins into their smallest elements. If this breakdown of proteins happens in your gut, we call the enzymes "digestive," because they help us digest our food. Systemic proteolytic enzymes, however, have a completely different purpose, so please don't confuse the two.

When taken on an empty stomach, proteolytic enzymes will pass through the stomach or intestine lining and enter the circulatory system. This is why they are called "systemic" - once they enter the circulatory system, they circulate throughout the body.

Why are systemic proteolytic enzymes important?

The most important thing that systemic proteolytic enzymes do is to break down excess fibrin in your circulatory system and in other connective tissue, such as your muscles. These enzymes bring nutrients and oxygen-rich blood that remove the metabolic waste produced by inflammation and excess fibrin.

For example, If you have an injury or are recovering from a painful condition of any kind and your blood flow is restricted, you will have a longer recovery process. In addition, the exchange of nutrients and oxygen in your body will be limited, and there will be an will have a longer recovery but an increase in pain and inflammation.

I searched long and hard to find this incredible image (left) of red blood cells caught in a web of excess fibrin. The fibrin is causing a physical restriction of blood flow. If you look closely, you can see that the cells are actually stuck. Ultimately, those red blood cells cannot get into the capillaries to oxygenate and nourish your muscles and remove the metabolic waste that is causing your pain.

One more important thing to understand: Whenever you're recovering from a muscle irritation, injury, or surgery, the body uses fibrin to help heal itself. This is normal and healthy. The only problem is that with poor blood flow and a lack of enzyme activity, that fibrin will start to accumulate. If the area in question is slow to heal, an excess of fibrin will appear as clumps of scar tissue in the muscle or at the surgical site. Once this happens, you acute condition becomes chronic.

Now that you know that excess fibrin throughout your circulatory system will severely limit the amount of blood flow to areas that need it the most, you may be wondering how the body tries to compensate for this restriction. The answer is simple: by forcing the heart to work harder and increasing your blood pressure.

How do you know if you have too much fibrin?

As I have noted, the body will do what it needs to do to keep us alive - sometimes at great cost to your overall health. Some possible indicators of excess fibrin in your system include: chronic fatigue, slow healing, inflammation and pain, and elevated blood pressure. There is also a medical test to measure something called "blood monomers."

The dangers of too much fibrin...

The medical community has long known that excess fibrin presents a cardiac and stroke risk. Finally, they have acknowledged a link between excess fibrin and chronic systemic inflammation, the true root cause of virtually every disease and painful condition know to man.

Which conditions do proteolytic enzymes help and how?

The list below is only a sample of the types of conditions that can be addressed with systemic proteolytic enzymes. Where do proteolytic enzymes come form?

Some are animal-bases, some are plant-based - such as Bromelain and Papain - and some are fungus-based, such as Serrazimes®.

Which types are best and why?

I recommend plant- and fungus-based enzymes because they tolerate the gastric environment better, so more of the enzymes make their way into the circulatory system.

How long does it take to start to work?

Enzymes go to work immediately. The big difference between enzymes and vitamins is the way they are measured. Enzymes are not measured by weight; they are measured in Units of Fibrolytic Activity, which means how much fibrin they break down in a set amount of time.

The questions you really want answered are: "How long will it take to get pain relief and reduce my inflammation?" and "How fast will my healing happen?" Truth is, there is no simple answer because the healing process and outcome will be different for everyone.

There are a number of factors that bear on how fast the enzymes will work for you, including dosage, quality of sleep, diet, and physical activity. Even the very treatments you are undergoing to try to get better could be holding you back.

Are proteolytic enzymes safe for continued use?

Yes, proteolytic enzymes should be considered safe for continued use. There are three suggested usage protocols: one is a rotation of 12 weeks on and 4 weeks off; two is to take them continuously; and three is to take them on as-needed basis.

Who should not take proteolytic enzymes?

1. Individuals taking prescription blood thinners (Coumadin, Heparin, Plavix)
2. Anyone who will be having surgery in less than two weeks
3. Individuals with known ulcers of the stomach
4. Individuals with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.(GERD)
5. Pregnant or lactating women
6. Individuals currently taking antibiotics
7. Individuals with an allergic reaction to pineapples or papayas

Are there any side effects?

Proteolytic enzymes have an excellent safety record, with no significant side effects reported. With any supplement, however, there is always the risk of developing an allergy to one or more ingredients. If this happens, you should discontinue use.

COX-2 Inhibitors

Yes, these work as well as NSAIDs while being less harsh on the stomach, but numerous reports of heart attacks and stroke have prompted the FDA to re-evaluate the risks and benefits of the COX-2s. COX-2 drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex were actually taken off the market because of these risks.

Narcotics Painkillers

This class of prescription drugs is powerful, but abuse and addition are serious side effects. An estimated 20 percent of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. The problem is serious and it is growing. The availability of drugs is probably one reason. Doctors are prescribing more drugs for more health problems than ever before. But at the very least, you must try to decrease your intake of sugars and hydrogenated oils and increase your daily intake of fiber. Ideally, you should be consuming 35 grams of fiber (that is a ton of fiber, but it's worth shooting for).

Get better sleep

7 to 9 hours of sleep is a must for optimal health; getting a good night's sleep is key to controlling systemic inflammation.

Relax more often to lower stress levels

Find time for yourself throughout the day to focus on your breathing and clear the clutter from your mind; learn to stay focused on the most important tasks in your life.

Exercise on a regular basis

People always ask me: What's the best exercise to do? I always tell them: Do something you like to do and, if your body can tolerate it, aim for 15-20 minutes three times a week.

Take control of Arthritis, and Get Your Life Back!

Red, burning, swollen and so stiff you don't want to move...that's what those who suffer from arthritis experience on a daily basis. What is Arthritis?

Arthritis actually means joint (arthr) inflammation (itis). Additionally, it can damage the joint cartilage which can lead to joint weakness, instability and visible deformities that can interfere and, in severe cases, limit a person's ability to perform most basic daily tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, using a computer keyboard, washing dishes or brushing your teeth. Arthritis can affect anyone regardless of age and most commonly affects joints in the knees, hips, hands and spine. If left undiagnosed and not treated properly, arthritis can cause irreversible damage to the joints, bones, organs, and skin. Not to mention dramatically impair your quality of life.

Arthritis-related conditions primarily affect the muscles and the bones but it is also considered to be systemic, affecting the whole body. Arthritis can cause damage to any bodily organ or system, including the lungs, kidneys, blood vessels, skin and even the heart. The Arthritis Foundation sites two independent studies (Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota) both of which prove that the widespread inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis is linked to heart disease and an increased risk of early death.

No one really knows the exact cause of arthritis but there are certain risk factors to keep in mind:

  • Genetics - likely to contribute to risk but no one knows how much.
  • Age - the older you are the more at risk you become.
  • Weight - maintaining a healthy weight will ease the load on the joints.
  • Previous Injury - major injuries are likely to contribute to risk.
  • Occupational Hazards - repetitive, high demand jobs increase risk.
  • Certain Sports - high level, high demand sports can contribute to arthritis (however, general exercise is always a plus)
  • Illness or infection - an infection in the joint or gout can lead to arthritis.

What we do know is that when you have arthritis your immune system goes into over-drive and causes the joints to swell and become inflamed. Therefore, treating the inflammation becomes key in managing the pain and discomfort associated with this condition.

Sadly enough, the Arthritis Foundation reports that half of those Americans with arthritis don't believe anything can be done to help ease their pain. You may be in that situation yourself, having thrown your hands up in frustration and simply decided to live with your pain. The good news is that by reducing the inflammation you can significantly ease the painful symptoms associated with arthritis.

Here are a few ways to reduce your inflammation:

  • Exercise - less weight equals less stress on joints
  • Diet - Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole-grain products; limit sugar, salt and fat (especially saturated fat found in animal products)
  • Rest - a good balance between rest and activity is the key to joint health
  • Over-the-counter and prescription medications - while these may provide temporary relief by masking the pain they are not always get to the root of the problem - inflammation. They can also have serious side effects, especially with long-term use.

Are the foods you’re eating keeping you in pain?

An Anti-Inflammatory Diet Could Be the Ticket to Feeling Better

When I say the word "inflammation," it's likely to evoke thoughts of painful joints and muscles, swelling, and a loss of mobility. But did you know that recent research shows that chronic inflammation in your body can lead to serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, and Alzheimer's disease, to name just a few?

The amount of inflammation in your body varies and is dependent on a number of factors - including your activity level, the amount of sleep you get, the degree of stress in your life, and even the foods you eat. What you have to realize is that these factors are cumulative - meaning they build up over time. And the more that any or all of these factors get out of whack, the risk for disease increases.

Early in life, these levels can be so low that you might not even be aware that you have any inflammation in your body. That's because our bodies do a fairly decent job of controlling the inflammation - at least for a while. Then one day you wake up and you're in your 40s and something is just not right. That's when the fear begins to set in, and you think to yourself: What did I do wrong? or What can I do now to help myself?

The first step is to get your C-reactive protein (CRP) levels tested. C-reactive protein is produced by the liver, and the level of CRP rises when there is systemic inflammation in the body. Ask your doctor about this (you may have to demand to have the test done). All it requires is a blood sample that will be evaluated by your doctor. And because diet can play a large role in how much or how little inflammation you have, you may want these levels looked at by a registered dietician who can help you formulate an appropriate eating plan.

If you have pain due to inflammation, you may choose to take the traditional medical path, which includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, and even joint-replacement surgery in extreme cases. The good news is that there are natural ways to fight inflammation without the undesirable side-effects that often result from the treatments listed above.

What You Eat Makes All The Difference

The food we eat is a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to controlling inflammation. The typical American diet consists of too much fat, tons of sugar, loads of red meat, and a frightening amount of processed foods - all of which are likely to increase inflammation and contribute to obesity, which itself is can cause inflammation. By switching to an anti-inflammatory diet plan consisting of healthy whole foods, you can actually decrease inflammation and ease the pain and discomfort associated with it.

The first step is to avoid processed foods, foods high in sugar, and junk food whenever possible. Instead, choose fresh whole foods, especially anti-inflammatory varieties such as lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. But choose carefully. Many vegetables and pre-packaged "health" foods can actually work against you. Use this handy list of the best and worst foods for controlling inflammation:

Pasta
Ice Cream
Cheddar Cheeses
Snack Foods
Oils such as vegetable and corn
Soda, caffeine and alcohol

In addition to these dietary changes it is also recommended that you:

* Maintain a healthy weight - There is no question that eating healthy is not easy nowadays, whether you're at home or at a restaurant. But at the very least, you must try to decrease your intake of sugars and hydrogenated oils and increase your daily intake of fiber. So needless to say people are freaked out to find that I train my abs in about 3 minutes.

Let me give you the dirty facts about my abs.

They are the worst part of my body... and one of the best parts at the same time.

The "worst" bit has nothing to do with muscles or even bodyfat most of the time... but SKIN.

Remember, I was obese... 46-inch waist and 38 percent bodyfat.

So my skin got pretty messed up. It never quite recovered from that and I have a "bit" of loose skin around my abs.

Drives me nuts. I may have it removed! ; )

But other than THAT... my abs are pretty good.

This is after THREE MINUTES of ab training done 2-3 times a week.

Let me spell out my thoughts on this:

     If you are training your abs longer      than 7 minutes a week you are doing      something wrong... or you're just      wasting your time.

Sorry to break it to you, but abs develop fast.

It's the BODYFAT you need to focus on.

Still, you need abs... and my HDT-Style Training in 7 Minute Body and 7 Minute Muscle will get you those abs uber-fast:

Before you do, let me give you a substitute exercise for one of the three I recommend during my "3-Minute Abs" routine (found in both books on the page above.)

Hanging leg raises... they are the best when done the way I show you in my book.

BUT some people do not have the gym or the straps I recommend.

So do this instead:  Leg raises on a Swiss Ball, bench or even off the floor.

Here's the tip:  Raise the legs, pause at the top for 2 seconds and blow ALL of your air out. Contract your abs HARD at the top.

Then and ONLY then lower the legs slowly.

If you do this right there's no way to get more than 15 reps. I get about 8 before my abs give out!

That's all it takes. You do NOT need "high reps" to develop your abs. In fact LOW reps work better...

You just need resistance... and my way of training gives you plenty.

This means a LOT less time doing the exercises and a LOT MORE time enjoying the nice set of tummy muscles you've built.

Sounds like a plan.

NSAIDs: This Widely Prescribed Medication Won't Cure Your Back Pain Problem

Why are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) the most prescribed medication for back pain? Simple. They help you make it through the day by taking the edge off. They make you feel better, or at least they help you forget about the pain. Despite their popularity, NSAIDs can keep you in a vicious cycle of pain.

It is true that NSAIDs help with pain and inflammation. It is also true that you will feel better if you take them. But the question to ask is this: Are you getting better? In an acute muscle strain situation, the answer is maybe. For sub-acute or chronic back pain, neck pain, or sciatica conditions, the answer is most likely no.

You see, regardless of the type of back pain condition you are suffering from, it is a physical problem, meaning it has to do with the strength and flexibility of your muscles, the position of your bones, and how precisely your joints work.

Let me be more specific: If the muscles in the front of your legs are much stronger than the muscles in the back of your legs, your pelvis will be pulled out of its normal position, eventually causing your spine to go into abnormal curvature. This is an underlying factor in just about all back pain conditions that are symptomatic. It's probably how your problem got started. This process may take many years to happen, but once it begins, it will progress until it becomes a chronic condition.

No NSAID can make a muscle stronger or more flexible. More importantly, NSAIDs cannot create balance between the muscle groups or cause a joint to function properly. So, if you simply opt for relief from pain, your body will just continue the debilitating process of getting older much faster.

Now that you know that NSAIDs will not address your underlying problem, you should also know about the WARNING the drug companies have to give you about these products. It is important information. The Food and Drug Administration has asked the manufactures to update the warning on the package to let customers know that serious cardiac conditions and intestinal problems can occur - and that these can lead to death. Nice!

If you are taking NSAIDs - and especially if you have been taking them for an extended period of time - you should be aware that these medications put a heavy strain on your kidneys and liver. You and you doctor should discuss appropriate precautions, such as having your liver enzymes tested to make sure that your liver is not being overtaxed.

So, if you start to experience any of the side effects that are described on the box, be sure to contact your physician ASAP. I also strongly suggest that you seek a qualified health care provider to help you address the underlying causes of your back pain.

The Best 16-Minute Workout EVER

When Jon Benson wrote "7 Minute Muscle" and "7 Minute Body" (the in-home version; both books come in the same package) I thought he was doing the muscle-mass crowd a huge favor.

I was right... and I was wrong.

I was right because the 7MM-style training has put serious muscle shape, tone, and size on people from all ages.

I was WRONG because it did more than just add lean muscle:

Yep: the workout Jon intended people to use for building muscle turned into one of the fastest ways to melt body fat.

Weird.

   The secret is density training.

Density is basically getting the most amount of work done in the least amount of time. More work in less time = more energy.

     More energy spent = greater fatloss.

Fatloss (and muscle-shaping) is not an issue of length of time as much as it is an issue of work divided by time.

The body was made to perform in bursts, not in long bouts. This is why our immediate fuel sources (which come mostly from carbohydrates) are WAY too efficient... so much so that we store incredible amounts of fat from consuming too many of the "fast-fuel" foods.

The best way to combat this fat-storing problem is to use your body the way it was designed to be used: In bursts of fat-burning power that are intense, short, and highly focused.

That's the basics behind density training.

Want a practical example? Great... let's look at a 7 Minute Muscle chest workout followed by a 7 Minute Muscle "GXP" Cardio workout.

     Your total workout time:  A whopping 16 minutes.

That's "TOTAL" workout and cardio time, minus a short warm-up.

After your warm-up, you would start with the first of two "Phases":

The first 5 minutes is called The Power Phase.

This is followed by The Mass Phase (Mass is for adding lean muscle) which last only 2 minutes.

During the Power Phase, your weight you select for any movement (from a bench press to a push-up) stays the same. This makes it very easy to shorten your rest intervals between sets.

Your repetitions will be a maximum of 5 for your Power Phase using a weight that's about 60% of your normal 5-rep max. You will rest as little as possible between sets.

The first few sets will feel light, but as time progresses this "light" weight will become more and more challenging. In fact you will drop your repetitions down quite low in order to complete the 5-minute Phase... and that's GOOD.

That's what we want:  As many repetitions as you can get during 5 minutes, but never exceeding FIVE repetitions, during your Power Phase.

Your rest intervals are up to YOU... you can rest a short or as long as you need.

     This is a very creative and personal workout!

Your goal is simple:  Get more TOTAL reps (called "Aggregate Repetitions", or "AR") than your previous workout.

This is what makes 7 Minute Muscle so unique: The progression is built-in.

Most people fail to progress in the gym because they simply do not track their workouts carefully enough.

With 7 Minute Muscle you don't have to track an entire workout:  Only ONE number. The total number of repetitions, or your "AR".

Simple!

Your Power Phase for a chest workout may look like this:

EXERCISE:     
Incline Machine Press (upper chest)

5 reps (rest 20 seconds)     
5 reps (rest 15 seconds)     
4 reps (rest 20 seconds)     
3 reps (rest 30 seconds)     
3 reps (rest 30 seconds)     
1 rep (rest 20 seconds)     
1 rep (end)

]Total AR:       22 reps     
Total Time:  5 minutes

Your goal next time is to get 23 repetitions using the same weight. Once you can get 5 repetitions every set it's time to increase the weight for this movement.

You would then move to your Mass Phase (2 minutes) which would be a different chest exercise for TEN repetitions.

Same goal, same principles apply... beat your previous AR.

The end result is a 7-minute workout that shapes your chest AND burns a lot of fat due to the principles of time/energy expenditure and the fact that muscle burns calories.

You end your 7 minute workout with "GXP" Cardio. This is 9 minutes long... that's it!  But your body is primed to melt off a lot of fat after your 7 minutes of intense weight training... and you will drop the fat if you do this workout right.

You start with 3 minutes on the exercise device of your choice (I prefer the treadmill.)

You work your way up to 85-90% of your maximum heart rate, or a perceived exertion rate on a scale of 1-10 of 7 to 8. No more is needed to get the desired results.

You stay at this level for just 3 minutes.

Then you cool down for 3 minutes.

     That's IT.

That's your entire cardio workout and weight-training workout... all in 16 minutes (about 20 with a warm-up.)

And you will progress faster, burn a lot more fat, and save SO much time you may have to take up a new hobby!

5 Minute Ab Workout

If you love bodyweight workouts and bootcamp programs, I'm going to give you a NO-equipment, bodyweight-only 5 minute circuit you can do anytime, literally anywhere. It's perfect for your bootcamp classes.

It's perfect and doesn't require you to haul around any bulky equipment around to your sessions.

- Do each exercise for 30 seconds.
- Do NOT rest between exercises.
- At the end of the circuit, rest 30 seconds before repeating one more time.

1A) Spiderman Climb or Spiderman Pushup
1B) Side Plank (30 seconds per side)
1C) Cross-Body Mountain Climber

Keep those abs "braced" and have FUN!
