How to Get Faster Results from Workout Tweaks

It's all about tweakin' the workouts. Let me show you how...

Tweak # 1 - Switch to Single Limb Exercises
In your workouts, you should use more single-leg exercises. For example, switch from the squat to the Bulgarian squat or split squat. It's more "taxing" on the system, taking more calories to recover from.

Bonus Upper Body Example - Switch from the Incline Chest Press to the 1-Arm DB Incline Chest Press. Lift for 6-8 reps/side and you will feel your abs working hard. It's one of my favorite "hidden gem" ab exercises.

Tweak # 2 - Use Density Circuits
I love using density circuits. They challenge you and you get more volume in less time. For example, set up a circuit of Squats, Pullups and DB Chest Presses. Do as many rounds of 8 reps of each exercise in 10 minutes.

Tweak # 3 - Incorporate Metabolic Workout Finishers to Your Program
Metabolic finishers can jump start any fat loss program and help you smack a plateau in the face. POW. (Don't worry, it's only a plateau.)

Don't think you have to spend an extra 30 minutes to complete a finisher, either. They are relatively short (some of them take only 2 minutes), so it's time well invested.

Finishers combine the conditioning effects of interval training and the metabolic effects of strength training into one intense "mini-workout". Say goodbye to cardio, and even intervals after your workout.

Here's your Sample fat burning finisher. It's called:

"The Bodyweight High 5"s Workout Finisher"

You'll do the following circuit 5 times, resting only when needed. You also time yourself because next week, when you perform this finisher, you're going to beat your previous time.

1A) Jump Squat (5)
1B) Decline Pushups (5)
1C) Burpees (5)


Fat Loss - FASTER.

It's going to be a TOUGH 5-minutes, and you're going to want that finish to come fast, but that finisher is also going to bring fast fat loss.

If you've been affected by cancer, you have to see this (VIDEO)...

I just came across something that really struck a chord for me...

Replace cardio with these crazy “finishers”

I’ve got something really cool for you today. It’s an article on how to replace cardio (even intervals!) with metabolic finishers, which take just a fraction of the time.

You won’t believe how effective these are. In fact, the author, Mike Whitfield, lost 105 pounds using these unique finishers. He explains how to replace cardio, even intervals with finishers below. Let me know how it goes!...
How to Replace Intervals with Finishers

I prefer metabolic finishers over interval training, but one good question I get is, “How do I replace intervals with metabolic finishers?”  That’s like asking me,”How do I make something that is already awesome into something awesomer?”

Let’s say you are facing one of these problems:

1) You’re out of town and lacking equipment
2) You used to enjoy intervals, but you found yourself in a rut or you find yourself constantly sore from interval training
3) You can’t make it to the gym

OK, you usually do interval training at the end of your workout on the treadmill.  You are on a program where you run at a difficult pace (9/10 exertion) for 30 seconds, followed by 1 minute of recovery (3/10exertion).  You usually do this 6-8 times for a total of 9 to 12 minutes.  Here is how to replace that with a metabolic workout finisher:

Do the following circuit 3 – 4 times:

1) Prisoner Squats (30 secs)
Rest 10 secs
2) Spiderman Push-ups (30 secs)
Rest 10 secs
3) Jumping Jacks (30 secs)
Rest 10 secs
4) Mountain Climbers (30 secs) (Your six-pack abs are having a blast!  Party! Party!)
Rest 30 secs

If you do the math, it takes just about the same amount of time to do the metabolic finisher above as it would to do the interval training.  It also doesn’t require equipment.

Another great method of interval training is KB swings. A popular method to use kettlebells for interval training is to do KB Swings for 30 seconds, and then rest for 30 seconds.  That’s a great way to burn fat, but how about we tweak it a little bit for a fantastic metabolic finisher?

You can shorten your time of KB Swings to 15 seconds, followed immediately by Explosive Push-ups for 15 secs, then rest for 30 seconds.  (Don’t give me that look about the Explosive Push-ups – it’s just 15 seconds). 

With you reducing the amount of time invested in KB Swings, your legs won’t be as sore the next day.  Also, you worked your upper body along with your lower body for extra calorie burning without having to add time to your workouts.  Boom goes the productivity dynamite.

A)    You hit all major muscle groups, burning more calories (on the bike, the emphasis is on the legs and episodes of Judge Judy)

B)     You are spreading the exertion all over the body, which allows your legs to be more fresh at your next workout

C)    You did more in less time

You just literally turned on the six pack abs igniter.

Those are just a few ways to replace traditional interval training with metabolic workout finishers.  Your legs will be fresher for your intense workouts and you will finally “finish” off that belly fat.  Ohhh man, that was a good sentence.  Besides, most interval training methods use the legs, so why not allow the rest of your body to help burn more fat in less time?

DON'T use these after conditioning (IMPORTANT)

Earlier this week, I was training a long time client.  As we approached his third circuit, he realized there wasn't a workout finisher at the end of his program.  "This whole workout is a finisher", he said.  Then I responded with "Revealed your opinion is" in a Yoda voice.

Training with me is good times.

Anyway, he asked me the perfect question - "When do you incorporate finishers and when are they not needed?".  I've answered that question dozens of times and it really depends on your program.

But let's dig a little deeper.  Let's figure this thing out.

A good rule of thumb is - you use a workout finisher at the end of a strength or metabolic resistance training session.

Yeah, Mikey, But What is Metabolic Resistance Training?

Awesome question imaginary friend that asked that.

Here is a quick explanation.  Metabolic resistance training is using big, compound movements in a non-competing manner with relatively short rest periods.  In other words, doing bicep curls and crunches is not MRT, however a circuit like this is:

1A) Goblet Lunge (8/side)

1B) DB Row (10/side)

1C) Close-Grip Pushups (20)

That would be the beginning of a MRT workout.  However, you can even use two moves as a metabolic resistance training workout.  So here's some bonus info - if you only have 10 minutes or so to work out - you can still get the benefits.  If you do a superset of Deadlifts and DB Chest Presses (as many supersets as possible in 10 minutes), you've accomplished a MRT workout in just 10 minutes.

Metabolic resistance training has been around for a while.  Awesome coaches like Craig Ballantyne and Alwyn Cosgrove have been using these workouts with their clients for years, but the coined term has been hitting the industry hard lately.

Now that we have a glimpse of what MRT is about, let's talk about when you can use finishers and when they are really not necessary.

When Finishers Compliment Your Program

If you just put up a solid STRENGTH session, than using a finisher at the end of this workout would be beneficial.  You would get the benefits and afterburn of strength training, while getting the benefits of using a finisher to increase your conditioning and bonus fat loss.

So, if you have a circuit of DB Rows, Lunges, Chest Presses (and maybe a little core work), you can plug in a finisher for increased fat burning after your main session.

So, you're looking at this:


Strength training (the bread and butter of your program) Metabolic Workout Finisher

That's when it's ideal.  Let's look at an example:

1A) Goblet Bulgarian Split Squat (8/side)

1B) DB Row (10/side)

1C) DB Chest Press (12)

Rest one minute and repeat two more times

2A) DB Romanian Deadlift (12)

2B) X-Body Mountain Climber (10/side)

2C) Facpulls (15)

Rest one minute and repeat two more times


Do the following superset 4 times, resting for 20 seconds between supersets

Burpees (8)

KB/DB Swings (20)

Sniff, sniff... that's your fat burning.  Mmmmm, roasted flab.

When Finishers Aren't Really Necessary

If your program requires a lot of conditioning, than using a finisher isn't really necessary.  Your nervous system wouldn't be able to take it and you could find yourself burned out.

For example, let's say your program looks like this:

1A) Jumping Lunges (10/side)

1B) Inverted Row or Strap Row (12)

1C) Pushups (1 rep short of failure)

1D) Total Body Extensions (20)

1E) Spiderman Climb (15/side)

1F) Shuttle Run (30 secs)

That program requires a lot of conditioning, and a finisher isn't really necessary.  The finisher is pretty much "blended" into the program itself.

Make sense?

So let's say you're on a 4-day rotating schedule of Metabolic Resistance Training workouts and Metabolic Conditioning Training workouts.

Here is how you could get the MAX benefit of using finishers with your workouts:

Day 1 Metabolic Resistance Training (you could add a finisher after this workout)

Day 2 Metabolic Conditioning (no finisher necessary - you'll be toast)

Day 3 - off day

Day 4 - Metabolic Resistance Training (you could add a finisher after this workout)

Day 5 - Metabolic Conditioning (no finisher necessary)

Days 6 and 7 - off day

Hopefully, this clears the confusion on when and when not to use finishers.

So, let's gather in a big circle boys and girls.

When is it a good time to use workout finishers in your program?

Answer - After a strength training or metabolic resistance training session.

When can you skip a finisher?

Answer - when your program already has plenty of conditioning.

All-day energy without caffeine (here are 2 easy recipes)

It never ceases to amaze me when I walk into a gas station or convenience store and see the piles of energy drinks that are now on the market.

Obviously, we ALL need more energy but are these energy drinks the right way to do so?

I'm sure you know better by now.

If you want more than just a quick jolt of energy, then stimulants like caffeine will NEVER help you.

They will, in fact, work against you…

Amazing Way to Finish ANY Workout

So, I heard about Mike Whitfield's approach to eliminating cardio (including intervals) after your workout and I was crazy enough to try one of his metabolic "finishers".

Here it is if you want to try it yourself (but be warned, this is tough). In fact, make sure this is done AFTER your favorite workout:

The "Nasty 3's" Finisher (he loves naming his finishers)

Complete the following superset 8 times, resting for 10 seconds between supersets:

1A) Burpees (3)
1B) Prisoner Squat (3)

That's one of the finishers from his client's programs that helped him drop 34 lbs in just 12 weeks AND win $1,000. Of course, it's no wonder... even if your diet isn't perfect, you're bound to drop fat doing crazy, but effective finishers like that.

Now I want to share with you how to approach his density finishers (finishers in which you do as many rounds as possible in a certain amount of time... usually 3-5 minutes):

DON'T train to failure... if you leave about 3-5 reps in the tank during a metabolic finisher, you'll find that you can put in more reps and sets overall.

And that means more calories being burned...

... which means YOU smash a plateau

That's one of the secrets he has learned with his clients, and that's how they approach their finishers with their programs.

Mike hasn't "prescribed" cardio to any of his online or offline clients in years. He keeps creating these finishers for them to do.

Shocking weight loss story and photos!

Weight watchers, calorie counting, low carb….none of them gave me any long-term results. Finally, I decided to start eliminating meat from my diet.

After much research, I learned the ramifications of eating meat. Morally and physically, I was opposed to what meat did to me. After 6 months of taking meat out of my diet, I took the plunge and went vegan.

And although I was feeling better – more energy, happier, lighter in my step – I still had not lost the weight. Frustrated but determined that I had made the right decision, I kept on reading and researching. That’s where I found you.

While browsing Facebook one day, I saw a link to your site. I had read about going raw but friends and family had discouraged it because they thought it was too hard (the same friends and family who discouraged me from going vegan!).
