Get more results from less training?

[Research] 60-minute Workouts WORSE than 30-minute?

In a new study published in the American Journal of Physiology, scientists found that 30-minute workouts resulted in the same amount of weight loss as 60-minute workouts.

This despite the fact that the 60-minute workouts burned TWICE the calories (600 per workout) as the 30-minute workouts (only 300 calories per workout).

At the end of 13 weeks, the 30-minute workout group lost 8.8 pounds of fat, while the 60-minute workout group lost 8.4 pounds...only slightly less, of course, but still, you'd expect MORE fat loss if you trained TWICE as long, right?

Strange, isn't it?

In fact, the scientists couldn't even explain these disappointing results from the longer workouts. But they DO know that there is some type of compensation that occurs giving your LESS results from LONGER workouts.

That clearly makes 60 minute workouts WORSE than 30-minute workouts, at least in my opinion.

Bizarro workout world, I agree. But bottom line...

Long 60-minute workouts aren't necessary.

And worse, long workouts probably lead to more overuse injury.

Fat Loss Programs that Don't Make No Sense

Ben Teal has made quite the splash this year with his ground breaking Metabolic Mayhem system. And then he took it a step further by slashing his price and declaring December 21st the Dawning of Mayhem.

That was kind of a bad idea. Turns out that he studied economics AND philosophy in college. So after yammering for what seemed like an eternity about Aristotle and the number of teeth a horse has, he finally revealed his secrets.

Fat Loss Programs that Don't Make No Sense

Whether the world were going to end on December 21st or not (it's not), this is the time of year that people tend to focus on making new beginnings.

Are you one of those people?

Every year people "resolve" to lose weight. And then, like lemmings to the cliff, on January 1st, they flock to the nearest treadmill or elliptical trainer. And like good little lemmings, they mindlessly punch some buttons, and away they go… well, they don't actually go anywhere.

They don't lose any fat. They just get tired, red faced and sweaty.

When they question their fitness "expert", they're told that they didn't work hard or long enough. That they're not committed.

Many of the so-called "experts" still don't get it. In the face of an avalanche of research, they still don't understand this simple truth.

Working out hard is not the same as working out smart.

But you're different. You know that there's more to this fat loss thing than passing the minutes slogging through another long, boring cardio session.

As many of my fellow southerners would say, these types of "fat loss" programs don't make no sense.

So what's the secret to maximizing fat loss in minimum time? How can you workout smarter?

The key to maximizing your workout program is to do shorter workouts.

There are two ways to do this (and both are backed up by strong scientific research).

1. Increase the intensity of your workout.

The research for increasing the intensity is piling up. By increasing the intensity of your workouts, you can burn more calories in just a fraction of the time. In fact, a recent study suggested that by increasing the intensity of your exercises, you could potentially triple the amount of energy use… in 1/4 of the time.

The implications of this finding are huge.

This research implies if you workout at say, 20% of maximum intensity for 40 minutes, or 80% of maximum intensity for 10 minutes, you'd potentially burn 3x more calories in the 10 minute session.

But that's not all. A study published just a few short months ago compared two groups. Group 1 did a 4-minute Metabolic Mayhem style workout (compound bodyweight movements) four times per week. Group 2 trudged along on the treadmill 4 times per week.

Would you believe that the Metabolic Mayhem style group had similar increases in overall endurance as the treadmill group. Better still, the 4-minute, high intensity group increase muscular endurance MORE THAN they low intensity group.

Guess which group reported enjoying their workouts more? You guessed it! The Metabolic Mayhem group.

Similar results in 15% of the time. Once again, short burst, intense workouts are the secret to creating true Metabolic Mayhem for burning maximum fat in minimum time.

2. Break your workouts up into two or three shorter sessions.

There have been several studies that have shown that if you take, say you're 30 minute routine, and you broke it into the 10-minute routines (or one 10-minute and one 20-minute) that you'd burn more fat than if you just did the 30 minute workout.

"Interesting," you say. "But why?"

Once again, it comes back to intensity. When you break you workouts into shorter sessions, you can work harder in each session.

Think of it this way. There is a large consensus around interval training and the benefits for shedding unwanted fat. That's because you can maximize your workout intensity. if you do 8 intervals with a 1:1 work ratio, you'll have basically done an all out sprint for 8 minutes.

But without the rest in between the sprints, you'd have never been able to workout at that hard for eight consecutive minutes. Your intensity would have decreased steadily.

Now blow that up to 30 minutes, and apply interval training on a macro scale.

You can do a 10-minute bodyweight resistance workout in the morning while your spouse is in the shower (I call these Morning Metabolic Motivators).

And then, after the kids are in bed later that evening, so a Metabolic Muscle routine followed by a Shred Circuit.


You just got the best of both worlds. You've jacked up the intensity and broken your workouts up to maximize the fat burning effect that comes with increasing intensity. And not a single session lasted more than 20 minutes.

That's 110% pure ghost chili spicy sauce.

What would a Metabolic Mayhem style workout look like?

That's an excellent question. Give this one a try and let me know how you like it...

It’s an AMRAP workout (AMRAP stands for As Many Rounds As Possible).

Do AMRAP of this circuit in 10 minutes, resting as little as possible.

1. Reverse Lunges x 10 (each leg)

2. Spiderman Push Ups x 10 (each side)

3. Full Body Extensions x 10

4. Plank x 30 seconds

Will the World End Friday?

I'm writing this email out of breath with excitement...

Can 4 minutes of bodyweight exercises (like burpees) work just as well as traditional 30-minute cardio workouts?

Researchers from Queen's University say it can...

In their study, published in "Applied Physiology Nutrition and Metabolism", the scientists had 22 college-aged women do 4 workouts per week for 4 weeks, splitting them into one of three groups:

    Group A did 30 minutes of treadmill running at 85% max heart rate.

    Group B did 8 rounds of 20 seconds of a single exercise (burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, or squat thrusts) with 10 seconds of rest between rounds, for a total of 4 minutes.

    Group C did nothing (they were the non-training control group).

Here were their shocking results...

Despite training just 1/7th of the time, Group B increased their aerobic fitness levels by the SAME amount (about 7-8%) as Group A. That's right... even the short, intense, bodyweight workouts were equally as effective as 30 minutes of boring cardio.

Now here's where the study gets interesting...

First, Group B was the only group to INCREASE their muscular endurance in common exercises like chest presses, leg extensions, sit-ups, and push-ups.

Second, these unconventional bodyweight workouts resulted in members of Group B reporting GREATER overall workout enjoyment.

And that was just from one 4-minute blast of bodyweight exercises.

Increase Your Physical Strength Just by Using Your Mind!

Sounds like one of those too-good-to-be-true claims, we thought. But researchers at Bishop's University in Quebec recently conducted a study* which indicated that mental training alone could increase muscle strength.

The two-week study took 30 male university athletes and divided them into three groups. The study focused on the hip flexor muscles, since that is one muscle group that can't be readily exercised in other contexts or with free weights.

One group performed physical training with a hip flexor weight machine; one group mentally practiced hip flexions at increasing amounts of weight; the third group did neither. At the end of the study, the group doing the physical exercises had increased its strength by 28.3%, which is not surprising. The group who did nothing not unexpectedly saw almost no difference. But what's astounding is that the guys who practiced only mentally saw their strength increase by 23.7%!

The bottom line of the study isn't that we don't need to exercise—of course we do—but rather that empowering your mind in order to improve your body can really enhance your performance!

An awesome story of persistence

Every so often I hear a story that makes me smile, my friend and functional training expert was recently sharing with me his story of how he became a trainer and how he learned what really worked.

This story isn’t all fun and games, it is full of good lessons that you can apply to your workouts and your life. So, without further adieu….


How I Came To Be A Functional Training Expert

I wasn’t always a fitness expert, in fact years ago, where my journey began I was simply a window covering manufacturer. So how did I go from minimum wage earning, factory worker to functional training expert?

It all started on a warm sunny day almost 10 years ago. I decided that it was a good idea to ride my bike to work, after all why spoil the sunshine. I hopped on and casually cruised my way to the window cover manufacturing job where I worked, not knowing what was soon to happen.

I arrived on time and spent the day stringing up custom wood blinds in the warehouse, meanwhile dreaming of hitting the beach and getting some sunshine. As the workday came to an end I hopped back on my bike eager to get home and enjoy the day.

As I strolled down the road to a day filled with sunshine and freedom I suddenly got bombarded by a swarm of bees flying across the road. I slowed to a halt and didn’t move as I watched 1,000′s of bees fly past my face. It was as if something was trying to stop me from getting home.

Alas no harm, no foul and no bee stings, as the cloud of insects thinned I was off again on my merry way to enjoy the rest of my day. I rounded the corner and proceeded on my pleasant bike ride home when…


I was struck by an SUV on my left side knocking me across the pavement and onto my back. Immediately I knew that this was no small injury. My knee filled with excruciating pain and even the slightest attempt at movement sent me wrenching in agony.

They hauled me away to the hospital and after the smoke cleared and the diagnosis was finalized I went away with a cracked femur, a dislocated kneecap and a torn meniscus. All in all, after undergoing surgery, I was to sit in a chair with no weight bearing allowed for 8-12 weeks. My fun in the sun was no longer at the forefront of my mind.

Fast forward to my recovery phase where I ended up going to a physical therapy clinic that didn’t know their foot from their hand and managed to do little in the way of reducing my pain and increasing my useful strength.

I was discharged with a limp and told to go on with my daily life. This was unacceptable to me and I became hell-bent on discovering a method that would help me build strong powerful legs.

My path took many different twists and turns to discover the secret to not only rebuilding my leg, but instead, turning it into the most powerful part of my body. What I discovered along the way is the secret to quick and lasting results, the complete elimination of boring workouts and the most efficient keys to unlocking massive strength and power you will ever discover.

Every year, from Thanksgiving through Christmas, I would really "cut loose" on my food and because I'm a Whitfield, I gained a lot of weight rapidly.

In fact, one year I gained almost 18 pounds in 7 weeks! Then, I had to work like crazy to get it back off in January. I still remember showing up to my relative's Christmas parties and feeling everyone stare at me. I was totally embarrassed.

A Different Way To Workout?

I may have found an entirely different way to workout. You see, traditional workouts focus primarily on getting stronger or increasing reps, right? And while this is certainly one of the keys to getting better results in your workouts, are there other components that could help you get better results that you may not be considering?

1 hard boiled yolk
2 Tbsp chopped green onion
2 Tbsp chopped celery
Dash curry powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
Whip cottage cheese and milk until smooth in a mixing bowl. Blend remaining ingredients except egg whites with cottage cheese mixture. Add diced egg whites to cottage cheese mixture. Mix well. Serve on a bed of greens. Enjoy!

That looks way better than the boring egg salad most people usually make. ;-b

You think you know lower body training? Read this…

You know those lower body workouts that you never forget? The ones where it hurts to sit down in a chair… Well, I may have one just for you!

Instructions: To perform the Squabatta workout set an interval for 20 seconds on 10 seconds off. Perform 8 sets of 20 seconds of bodyweight squats followed by 10 seconds rest.

How To Progress: In order to make progress with this workout, track the total number of squats you complete over the entire workout. Each time you practice, attempt to beat this number. A great goal to shoot for would be 100 reps.

Ok, so that workout looks fun but it could be a little too easy for you… Try this one on for size and see how it feels.

Workout #2 - The Cowboy Countdown

Intermediate Level Bodyweight Only

Instructions: To perform The Cowboy Countdown workout time yourself as you do 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 reps of each of the following 3 exercises in a circuit:

- Single Leg Wall Chair (measure breaths for reps)

- Side Lunges (Both Sides)

- Jump Lunges (Both Sides

How To Progress: In order to make progress with this workout, track the amount of time it takes to complete this workout and improve on that time.

And if that’s not hard enough for you, try out this last workout and you will find out how challenging the workouts contained in Tyler’s Warrior Lower Body System get.

Workout #3 - Shrimp Challenge

Advanced Level Bodyweight Only

Instructions: To perform the Shrimp Challenge workout, set a timer to go off every 1 minute. At the top of each minute perform one set of shrimp squats to failure with only one leg. When the next minute rolls around perform one set with the other leg. Try using the most challenging variation of the shrimp squat that you can currently do and repeat for a total of 5 rounds each side.

How To Progress: In order to make progress with this workout, track the total number of reps you were able to get in all 5 rounds on each leg. From there, progress by adding either more rounds, or more reps in the same amount of time.

If you can complete this last workout with ease then kudo’s to you, in fact workout #3 was a breeze then you probably don’t need Tyler’s lower body workouts at all.

Now this is some effective lower body training

It’s not very often that someone sends me a new program that truly get’s me excited. I mean, people contact me all the time with their so-called “great solution” to getting crazy strong and fit. But the truth of the matter is the vast majority of these programs suck… like really suck!
